New Zealand is a small, democratic nation in the South West Pacific Ocean and is home to around 4 million people. Like all early New Zealanders the Muslim community was initially comprised of immigrants with the first Muslims being 15 Chinese gold diggers recorded in the 1874 census. Since then our ethnically diverse community, with origins in more than 40 countries, including many 2nd & 3rd generation, New Zealand born Muslims, Maori and Pakeha has grown to 0.9% of the population as recorded in the 2009 census.
